The 2008 Rice County Fair is just around the corner and if you have a good singing voice and enjoy singing, the Fair is looking for you! We're looking for someone to sing the National Anthem at the beginning of the Grandstand Events each night. If you're interested, please call Chris or Jim at the Fair Office (507) 332-2470.

* What is a county fair without a variety of different contests? If you are not familiar with the different types of events that the Rice County Fair offers you, from your home garden to photography, you should pick up a Fair Premium book at any of the banks in Rice County. We are on Wednesday of the fair July offering three special food contests this year. The first being held
On opening night of the fair, with the NELSON’S MARKET PLACE, chocolate contest, then on Wednesday night we will have the FARIBAULT FOODS, salsa contest starting at 6:30 on the Cannon stage, with two divisions. First place in each division will pay a cool $50.00 each. Then the big Minnesota Sesquicentennial Decorated Cake Contest that will be held on Sunday, the final day of the fair.
* The area behind the conservation building on the fairgrounds were the fairgrounds fountain has been renovated, will host two different workshops during the fair. The first workshop will be all about raingardens. How to design and build a raingarden. Wednesday July 16th at 1 pm, then Thursday and Friday, July 17 and 18 at 6 pm and on Saturday July 19 at 1 pm. Then the DNR foresters will discuss the benefits of proper tree selection, mulching and tree pruning, Wednesday of the fair July 16th at 3 pm and 6 pm.Then on Saturday July 19, at 4 pm, they will have a Balled and Burlapped Tree Planting Demonstration behind the conservation building.
* Now, let me tell you all about the free entertainment we have for you at this years fair.We have two free stages with entertainment all week long in the afternoon and evening.
Opening night on the Cannon Stage will be D.C. and Hawk live country western group singing old country songs. Then if you liked Johnny Cash, you will really enjoy Sherwin Linton and the Cotton Kings on the Sellner stage after the Rice County Fair Queens contest. On Wednesday July 16th on the Cannon Stage in the afternoon the Magic Village show and Tim Chlan and friends will be playing old Time music, with ELVIS, coming to the fair with two shows on the Sellner Stage, shows at 5:15 and 8 pm, you do not have to buy your tickets early for this show, it is all free. The ELVIS show and Magic Village are sponsored by Manke’s service in Owatonna. Also on Wednesday will be the first ever Barn Dance, in barn 3, with the Cory Miller Fun Tyme Band playing old time music. Thursday the Peter and Paul Wendinger Band will play in the afternoon and evening at both stages. Back for a 10th straight year is Lyndon Peterson and his one man band. The Amazing Hula Hoopsters will take the stage at 5:30, right before the Whitesidwalls at 6:30, come early to get you spot at the Sellner Stage. On Friday afternoon and evening the sounds of Jeff Thompson will be heard on the Cannon Stage, with the Concertina Jam Festival on Friday afternoon and Sheltered Reality in the evening, from 6:30 till 9:00 pm. If you have never seen this group from DesMoines, Iowa, they will get your blood pumping. Saturday will be our annual Blue Grass and Gospel music festival, five bands playing on both stages all day and evening. Blue Wolf, Cedar Valley, Platte Valley Boys, String Fever and Saw Tooth.
* Beer Garden entertainment is outstanding from Tuesday till Saturday night. Opening night is the John Holm Band starting at 8:15 pm, the on Weds day and Thursday night is the Killer Hayseeds, with the Mister Peabody Band on Friday and Saturday night. Something new this year at the fair will be a happy hour from 5pm- 6 pm

* At this years fair, the Rice County Historical Society should be on you list of things to see and do. They are planning lots of events all week long from Kids Activities at the log cabin, Butter and Soap making, coloring contest in the school to four weddings on Saturday of the fair in the church on the grounds.
* The popular Blue Grass and Gospel Music festival will again be held on Saturday of the Fair. Music starts at 12:45 p.m. and runs till 10:00 p.m. on both free entertainment stages. Platte Valley Boys, String Fever, Blue Wolf, Cedar Valley and a new high energy band made up of teen agars from Rochester, Saw Tooth will fill the day’s big festival you might want to bring a comfortable chair if you plan to stay for the day.
* For the first time at the Rice County Fair, we will be having an old fashioned barn dance. In cattle barn 3 on Wednesday evening from 6:30-9: p.m. the Cory Miller Fun Thyme Band from Rochester will be playing polka music. This first time event at the fair is being sponsored by KCHK radio.
* Also on Wednesday night will be the Salsa Contest on the KDHL Cannon Stage starting at 6:30 p.m. Two classes of Salsa, Prepared and Fresh, with first place getting $ 50.00 2nd place $ 30.00 and 3rd place $ 20.00 in both classes. This event is sponsored by FARIBAULT FOODS. Get all the information on the Salsa contest and all the other contests, from the premium book that you can pick up at any Rice County Bank or the Faribault and Northfield Chamber offices and Libraries.
* On Thursday evening before the Whitesidewalls perform on the Sellner stage, at 5; 30 the Amazing Hula Hoopsters will have a fun filled action packed one hour show. This is a family of young people from Hutchinson Minnesota who will make you laugh and say, I used to be able to do that! Oh –Maybe not that, but I could do that. Don’t miss it, I guarantee, you will have a great time. Mark it down, Thursday July 17th- 5:30 on the Sellner stage.
* Speaking a guaranteed fun, Internationally Acclaimed Acrobatic Comedian, Don Otto, “The Diving Fool” will be coming to the fair this year, with three shows daily. As you watch Don perform his copywritten, one of a kind, high flying comedy diving act, you will be watching one of the most accomplished trampoliniest / divers in the world having some fun with his sport. Try not to Miss Dons Free Show, everyday at the Rice County Fair.

* If you are planning to exhibit at this years Rice County Fair, you will need a Premium Book. As always, the book is full of information about the upcoming summer classic. From bringing your Holstein dairy cow to your special garden vegetables, you will need a book. The books are available at all banks in Rice County and the libraries in both Faribault and Northfield.
* What is new this year, just to the east side of the Conservation building, the landscaping has changed a little. The big fountain in the yard of the building is being renovated, and is hoped to be in operation by this years fair. The fountain has not been running for over 10 years, and when you come to the fair, it should be a must see area of our fair grounds that we are really proud of. Also in the same area, the Rice Soil and Water Conservation District is planning a rain garden to be planted, in hopes of fair visitors to learn about the importance of such a garden. The project is being chaired by STEVE PAHS, district manager of the Conservation District.
* One of the best values of the Rice County Fair is now on sale. The popular Passport to Fun, unlimited rides for the entire fair, can be purchased at Hy-Vee or Nelson’s Market Place or the Rice County Extension office. These special tickets are sold only in advance of the fair and can only be purchased prior to the fair, for only $ 45.00 per ticket.
* The Rice County Fair queen contest will be held on opening night of the fair. If you would like more information about the queen contest, pick up a Premium Book at a local bank or call KATHY CAP at 334-8827. Two other events that are planned for the Sellner Stage on opening night are the Nelson’s Market Place Chocolate contest at 5:30, and Sherwin and Pam Linton with the Cotton Kings Band from 7:30 till 10:30. All three of the events on opening night, along with many other free entertainment acts are always free at the Bruce Sellner Midway Memorial Stage during this years fair.
* As always, admission is always free to the fair, we only charge $ 5.00 per car or
You can buy a $ 15.00 week long parking pass for the entire week of the fair.
* This year, as in past years, we will be having our special attendance drawing of cash and two, week end trips to the Grand Casino and Treasure Island twice a day at 5:00 pm and 10:15 pm every day. Total amount of cash to be given away all week will be $ 1,250.00
* The Rice County Fair opens at 5:00 pm on Tuesday July 15th and run till Sunday night July 20th, 2008
